List view

Dive into the technical details of your fonts using the configurable List view: a compact overview of your library showing practical font meta information.

Font metadata

While the visual appearance is most important when exploring fonts for your designs, sometimes you may prefer to view a more technical overview of your fonts.

The flexible List view allows you to focus on font metadata, including font names, versions, kind, designers and more — all displayed in a compact table format. Perfect for cleaning up your library or finding the exact font version you need.

You can toggle between List (tabular data) and Grid (previews) using the view button in the toolbar. Alternatively choose View > as List from the main menu, or press Command1 for Grid, Command3 for List.

The List view is not just a simple table with font info — fonts are grouped by family and display useful aggregate data for all fields.

If the fonts in a family define multiple different values these values are all combined in the grouped family row. This allows you to quickly see which families contain fonts from multiple locations, different versions or manufacturers.

Other columns, such as PostScript Name and Path, show a common prefix of the individual font values. For example the PostScript Name field for American Typewriter will show AmericanTypewriter∗. That means that all styles in that family start with “AmericanTypewriter”.

At the top of the list a preview is displayed for the currently selected font. You can adjust its appearance using the controls in the toolbar.

To view individual styles and fonts you can expand a family by clicking on the disclosure arrow on the left of a row. You can also press the key on your keyboard to expand selected families. Press to collapse families.

The up and down arrow keys allow you to traverse the list and select the previous/next row, respectively.

Partial font families

A family may be a partial family. That means that not all of its fonts match your currently selected tag and filters. Only the members that exactly match will be displayed in the list. For example if you select the bold filter in the search field the app will only show bold styles.

The Name column will indicate how many of the total family styles are matched. For example 4 • 8 indicates that 4 of the 8 styles are displayed. Interacting with the family row (activation, drag and drop, etc.) will exclusively target the matched styles.

Partial font family

Double click on a family to view font details, or you can press the (spacebar) key on your keyboard to enter and exit details. When viewing font details the full family is targeted. This allows you to view all styles in a family, even if the family is partially matched in the list.

Sorting fonts

To change the order of your fonts click on any of the column headers. Your fonts will be sorted according to the information displayed in that particular column. Click again on the column header to change the sorting order from ascending to descending.

You can also sort fonts by choosing View > Sort by from the main menu. Choose the same menu item again to invert the order.

Fonts are sorted individually first, then they’re grouped by family. This means that inverting the sorting may not give a mirrored order. For example if you sort fonts by weight families with the smallest font weight will be ordered first. If you change to descending order families with the largest weight value will be ordered first. The same family may be shown at the top for both orderings, if that family contains both the smallest and largest weight.

Columns

The list view can be customized to show just the columns you want to see. Right click (or Control-click) on the table header to view a context menu with all available columns. Alternatively press and hold on the view button in the toolbar to reveal the Columns context menu. Choose any of the columns to toggle their visibility.

You can drag a column header to rearrange the columns. Drag the separator between column headers to resize a column. Note that columns will auto resize based on the width of the window if the Auto Size to Fit Window option is enabled. You can disable that option by right clicking (or Control-clicking) on the table header.

To change the order of your fonts click on any of the column headers. Your fonts will be sorted according to the information displayed in that particular column. Click again on the column header to change the sorting order.

Activation

The Activation column shows the activation status of a font. Activated fonts are available in your design apps. You can click on the activation indicator to activate or deactivate a font. Press and hold to view additional activation options.

Name

The Name column shows the family name for font families. This name is displayed in most font pickers. It may be a localized name, or a custom name if you’ve changed it by splitting or merging a family.

Next to the family name you can find the font count. This indicates how many styles are included in the family.

Partial families are indicated by two numbers. For example 3 • 8 indicates that 3 styles match the currently selected tag and filters. The family contains 8 fonts in total. When you drag or interact with that family row only these 3 styles will be affected. Double click on the family to view font details, which contains a list of all family members.

When expanding a family the column shows the full font name for the individual fonts. The full name often consists of the family name + the style name of a font.

PostScript Name

The PostScript name is the internal identifier of a font. Two fonts with the same PostScript name are considered duplicates. These cannot be activated at the same time.

Families show the common prefix of the PostScript names of family members. If a family contains multiple fonts with different PostScript names the field is marked by a ∗.

Style

The Style column displays the style name of individual fonts, such as Regular or Bold.

Families show the Style Range graph. This graph presents a visual summary of the font styles in a family. It allows you to see at a glance whether a family contains a wide range of font styles, or just a single one.

Font members are marked by bullets in the graph. These are ordered by weight: light on the left to bold on the right. The regular weight bullet is slightly larger, as a point of reference.

Font family style range
Family with a single regular weight
Font family style range
Family with a regular and bold weight

An outlined bullet indicates that there is just one variant: either roman (upright) or italic (slanted). A filled bullet indicates that there is a roman as well as an italic style for that weight.

Font family style range
A font family with light, regular, medium and bold weights — each weight has both roman and italic styles

If there are multiple styles for a specific weight, such as narrow and extended versions, or simply fonts with a different visual appearance, then these bullets are surrounded by a semicircle.

Font family style range
A font family with multiple weights, each weight has multiple variants (e.g. narrow/extended)
Font family style range
A font family with many weights, each weight has both roman and italic styles and additional variants (e.g. narrow/extended)

When sorting the Style column Typeface will sort your font families based on their Style Range. This is a handy feature when looking for families with a wide range of styles. Typeface takes into account the number of different styles that are available and the spread of the different weights. Duplicate fonts are conveniently ignored, so the families are properly sorted according to practical usage.

Weight

The internal weight value of a font, from lightest 0 to boldest 1000. A regular font has a weight value of 400. Note that the weight value is generally used to differentiate fonts within a family. These values are not very useful to compare font weights between different families. For example a weight value of 600 might appear thinner than a weight value of 300 from another family — this depends on the design of the font.

Families show the weight range of their individual fonts, e.g. 200-800.

Family

The original family name. This may be different from the Name column if the family was edited, or if the family has a localized family name. Edited families are marked by a merge icon.

Manufacturer

The name of the foundry that created the font.

Designer

The name of the designer that designed the font.

Kind

The kind column shows the general font format. OpenType CFF fonts are marked by OT. Fonts with TrueType glyph outlines have a TT icon. Note that TT fonts may also have OpenType font features — hover over the icon to get a tooltip with a more detailed format description.

Web fonts display a WF icon. This includes WOFF and WOFF2 fonts, which are compressed font files typically used for websites.

Variable fonts show a slider icon . These fonts can be adjusted using variable axes. Variable fonts can be OpenType, TrueType or in certain occasions WOFF under the hood.

Older PostScript Type 1 fonts are indicated by P1.

If a family contains multiple font formats the family row will show a mixed icon.

Version

The version column shows the internal version number of a font file.

Location

Indicates the location where the font file is imported from. For example a font may be imported from Font Book, from Google Fonts or from one of your custom imported locations.

If a family contains fonts from multiple locations all these locations are shown separately. This allows you to quickly see which families are imported from different locations, which you can optionally split into separate families.

Click on the location field to view a popover with the relative path to the font file. Hold down the Option key while clicking on the location to view the full path to the font file. You can double click on any of the folders in the popover to reveal that folder in Finder.

File

This column shows the font file name. If a family contains multiple fonts with different file names the common prefix is shown ending in a ∗.

Path

The full file path to the font file. Families show the enclosing parent folder which contains the family font files.

Imported

Shows the date a font was imported into your Typeface library. Families show the last import date for all members. When sorting descending (oldest imported first) then each family shows the oldest import date for family members.

Quick Collection

Collect a font by clicking on the Quick Collection button. This allows you to temporarily mark fonts while browsing your library. Press (return) to collect the currently selected fonts in the list.
